Project X Wigs Out with Sam Burnett

Wigs are an essential part of work as a modern hairdresser, providing endless creative opportunities for stage, show and shoot work.

When working with professional models, colour changes and cuts often aren’t an option – but with a good wig, the only restrictions are on your creativity. Wigs are also increasingly popular with clients, inspired by the constant colour and style changes of their favourite celebrities. Then there are wigs for medical hair loss, which is increasingly important work for salon stylists. Helping clients style their NHS wig for a more fitting finish can make a huge difference to confidence, but requires a specific set of skills.

With all this in mind, Sam Burnett of Hare and Bone dedicated his mentoring day with Project X to the art and craft of cutting, colouring and styling wigs. Following an introduction to Sam and his work, he started the session by showing the team two ways to prepare the hair with different wig wrapping techniques to ensure a clean, neat fit no matter the hair type or length. Sam then moved on to the practical side of creating a wig in an insightful demonstration before the team got hands on and created their own bespoke wigs.

I’ve made a few wigs in my time for shoots. I’ve also cut them for clients who wear them for medical reasons. However I was still really surprised at the instant difference in appearance that a wig makes. It was incredible how different we all looked when we put our own wigs on that we had made! I’ve now decided to do a collection of styles for a shoot to show the instant change in colour or length, which I think is something clients will love.

This was a brilliant day being taught by a patient, fun person with a lot of knowledge and experience. I think all hairdressers should learn how to make and work with wigs and hairpieces because it’s an incredibly useful skill. - Charlotte Johnson from The Annexx
